1. A chocolate maker has to make 25 pieces each of length 3cm from a square shaped bar of length 75cm. If he takes 5 seconds to cut a single piece, then the time(seconds) taken to make 25 pieces is: (Note: The chocolate maker makes single piece of cake for a cut)

A. 125

Since each piece takes 5 seconds, we may conclude that for 25 pieces --> 25 x 5 = 125 seconds.

But after making 23 pieces with 23 cuts, there will be only one cut needed to get two pieces.

The 24 th cut gives two pieces so that we finally get 25 pieces with 24 cuts.

So, 24 x 5 =120

2. There are 200 questions on a 3 hr examination.Among these questions are 50 mathematics problems. It is suggested that twice as much time be spent on each maths problem as for each other question. How many minutes should be spent on mathematics problems ?

A. 36

B. 72

C. 60

D. 100

If x is the time allotted for each math problem, then x/2 will be the time allotted for each other question. (Since math problem takes twice as much time compared to non math question).

50x = Total time for the math problems.

150(x/2) = 75x = Total time for the rest of the questions.

50x + 75x = 3 hours = 180 minutes

125x = 180

25x = 36

50x = 72 minutes

Therefore, 72 minutes should be spent for the mathematics problems.

3. A can do a work in 18 days, B in 9 days and C in 6 days. A and B start working together and after 2 days C joins them. What is the total number of days taken to finish the work ?

(A + B + C)’s one day’s work = (1/18) + (1/9) + (1/6) = (1 + 2 + 3) / 18 = 6 /18 = 1/3

(A + B)’s one day’s work = (1/18) + (1/9) = (1 + 2) / 18 = 1 / 6

(A + B)’s 2 days’ work = 2 x (A + B)’s one day’s work = 1 / 3

After two days A, B, C will join together to complete the remaining work 2 / 3

(A + B + C)’s one day’s work is 1/3, ஃ 2 / 3 work will be completed in 2 days by A, B, C

ஃ Total number of days taken to finish the work = 4 days (including A+B’s 2 days work)

4. A can do a work in 15 days and B in 20 days. If they work on it together for 4 days, then the fraction of the work that is left is:

A’s 1 day’s work = 1/15

B’s 1 day’s work = 1/20

(A + B)’s 1 day’s work = (1/15) + (1/20) = 7/60

(A + B)’s 4 day’s work = (7/60) x 4 = 7/15

5. A software engineer has the capability of thinking 100 lines of code in five minutes and can type 100 lines of code in 10 minutes. He takes a break for five minutes after every ten minutes. How many lines of codes will he complete typing after an hour?
